A successful struggle for land grant by a community of working class immigrants led to the development of this affordable housing project. The project has successfully rehabilitated 3000 of the original 6000 agitating members and provided affordable housing to another 3152 eligible city dwellers from lower income segments. The affordable housing was financed through community funds and cross subsidized by commercial development and market rate housing at the site. Despite limited support by the government, the project has built a successful self-sustaining mix-use and mix-income township development demonstrating effective use of land and resources. Many sustainable strategies have been used effectively to cut costs, reduce dependencies on city infrastructure and respond to site development in an environmentally sustainable manner.
